Every note in this collection has a story to it (some personal, others no so much). I have tried to be as authentic and open as discretion permits. I have deliberately divided the work into stand-alone chapters which are non-successive. Some are a few pages long and others a few sentences long. So you can start from the front, back, middle, wherever, who cares?
And if some of the thoughts I present mess with your church mind or contradict your theology. I urge you to think again while I reserve my right to change my mind in volume 2. So there is no formula to enjoying this book but God forbid that you read it all in one sitting. Who does that? !?! Read. Think. Read. And think again.
Akinloluwa is a trained physicist who works as a renewable energy enthusiast by day and a writer by night. He in an introvert who strongly believes that we are all inherently complex people and so can not be defined by a single narrative. He is particularly drawn to social commentaries, religion and the philosophy of science.
In a Constellation of Vital Notes, he delves into the world of pop culture, spiritual wisdom, social expectations and his own background - an amalgamation of his Nigerian descent and American education. He unabashedly approaches topics as human sexuality, personal responsibility, the nature of God and the inevitability of death. The book is also his attempt at using photography to draw attention to some issue that are close to his heart. Issues like climate change, societal pressures faced by young adults, death, marriage and the future of energy.
Then came the plaintive anguish of a wife for a beloved husband. Her husband was dead. Such finality. Her face contorted in pain, her pride and crown gone. Just like that. You don’t ever want to see or hear the cry and agony of a woman’s soul like that. He was her first and only love. The one she had promised to spend the rest of her life with. Snatched from her with such disregard. Her loss was as irreversible as death was inexorable. My heart was violently torn from my chest. And for many days I felt my heart lived outside my body. This one was particularly painful because there was an umbilical biologicality involved. It was my dad.
So death set us on the road to Golgotha, without any signposts or road signs. Just blind. Death is immorally audacious and mindless. It is a robber and a scavenger. Death is no respecter of persons. It does not respect power, wealth or accomplishments. It doesn’t respect your faith either. Religiosity is not a passport to personal immortality. It plucks the young as it does the old. There’s no appeasing it. And the death that kills one’s age-mate is sending one a message in proverbs. We are all walking dead, our lives fleeting like the flower that is today and gone tomorrow. Death stalks and you can’t call the cops on it. Neither 911 nor 999 will work.
Seeing that all our lives are fleeting and that death is a debt everyone owes and must pay, must we then despair? Although there are rumors that there might be a welcoming village, where the streets are made of gold and the lights don’t go out. Can we stake all our life on it? Some would say yes, others wouldn’t. Truth is, you’ll never know for yourself until you die. It is appointed unto man once to die and after that, we’ll find out. There is no harm in hope. But the problem arises when hope transforms into arrogance and believers begin to view the promise of the afterlife as so important and begin to value it more immensely than this present life. Truth is, this life is the only thing of which we are certain. All we have is here and now. So we must carpe diem. Seize the moment. We must live with purpose. We must have goals. We must have desire. Yes, life ends; but that in itself, is a reason to celebrate and find happiness. We must have ambition and pursue it. We must find a dream that makes life worth living. Death is around the corner. Although life is fleeting and death is imminent, we must not allow ourselves to be paralyzed by the fear of the inevitable. We must have aspiration and rejoice in the certainty of the present.
And so I have experienced death. And I’ve endured sorrow too. And there is no human being alive that has not, in some way, shape or form, been touched by the shadow of death. And it’s unfair that anyone should have to bear the burden of the kind of grief death inflicts. So let us mourn the departed as they deserve but not to the extent that it brings our own lives to a halt.
In the next decade, there will be a acute deficit of Christian and godly mentors who understand the culture and are in touch with the unique social and political environment in which we now live. This book is my first attempt to provide some supply for this scarcity. The book is conceptualized to appeal to these crop of young adults between the ages of 18 and 35 who appreciate arts, media and the likes and are in dire need of godly direction and authentic and grounded faith. This book and author are both uniquely positioned to cater to the demography.
