About the author

I'm a writer, journalist and vegan business consultant currently splitting my time between my home in the UK and Brussels, Belgium. I’m a blogger for The Huffington Post and I also write the travel features for Vegan Food & Living Magazine. I often head out of Brussels to nearby cities and countries, devouring plant-based delicacies on the way. I have a wanderlust problem, and I love it. My professional background is editorial and I have almost 10 years of experience. Some might call me a grammar geek, but I say there are few things better than a well-placed semi-colon.

Synopsis

Hello!

I'm Rachida Brocklehurst, writer, journalist and vegan. My mission is to bring at least one vegan option to as many restaurant menus as possible, promote vegan-friendly products and businesses and help people transition to a healthy, vegan lifestyle. There are so many preconceptions surrounding veganism, and I'm keen to highlight that a vegan and cruelty-free way of living needn't be restrictive.

You can still visit high-end gourmet restaurants, you can enjoy fantastic holidays in the best locations and hotels, you can still have a wide range of choice when it comes to cosmetics and ethical fashion. But for some reason, there are lots of people who perceive veganism as a bit too extreme, too difficult and fussy.

Well, I'm here to break the stereotype of veganism, without losing the ethical importance of choosing a plant-based way of living.

Think stylish vegan leather bags and champagne with a side of kale!

As someone who travels frequently, and spends a lot of time outside the UK, I've encountered so many places that were unaware of plant-based eating. Some were keen to know more and adapt their menus, some not so much. But I hope this book can not only be of service to the casual vegan or vi-curious reader, but also to businesses who are keen to explore reaching a wider range of clients by offering vegan options, or marketing existing ones in a more direct way.

Being vegan doesn't meant missing out; instead it's a chance to open up to a new world that you might not have seen before.

The Contemporary Vegan seeks to connect the gap between standard and vegan lifestyles in a non-judgemental, entertaining and practical way.

Outline

Introduction An introduction to myself, The Green V and my vision. Supporters will be thanked along with general acknowledgments.

Chapter 1 What is a Contemporary Vegan? A look at veganism in 2017 and the modern day. Why is it gaining momentum? What attracts people from all walks of life to the movement?

Chapter 2 Struggles & Problems What problems constantly arise for vegans and what can be done to rectify this.

Chapter 3 Everyday Activism Not everyone wants to (or feels comfortable) going to protests and marches, and activism can take all sorts of forms. Practical advice for demonstrating benefits of veganism in your own unique way.

Chapter 4 Practicalities of Vegan Living Breaking down the basics of the vegan lifestyle and how to forge your way ahead with confidence (label reading, useful facts, nutrition). Answering those myths, correcting assumptions and including expert advice from a variety of professional and knowledgeable people and sources within the community.

Chapter 5 The Art of the Feast A guide to delicious, nutritious vegan meals that will please the whole family. Includes a selection of guest recipes from nutrition and fitness experts.

Chapter 7 Cruelty-free Fashion? A look at how societal views are impacting both high-end and high street fashion. Includes tips and guidance on how to chose ethical clothes.

Chapter 8 The Ugly Side of Beauty Examines modern ethical issues surrounding 'greenwashing' and 'fluffywashing' and other practices of non-transparent information regarding cruelty-free skincare and cosmetics. Offers practical advice and suggestions - and even some DIY tips too!

Chapter 9 Welcome to Planet Vegan Exploring how you can still travel with ease whilst being vegan or plant-based. Looks at eating out, top tips from vegan nomads, what to bear in mind when travelling or booking a holiday and the best cuisines that naturally cater to vegan eating.

Chapter 10 Mini Guides to Top Vegan Cities A breakdown of some of the most vegan-friendly cities out there. Where to stay, eat, shop and more!

Chapter 11 Vegan Capitals in Focus A full guide to several 'vegan capitals' in greater details that previous chapter.

Chapter 12 Vegan Business Bootcamp First steps to starting an ethical and vegan-friendly business. How to reach out to vegan clientele and market your product, restaurant or business accordingly.

Chapter 13 The Lux List How to live a luxurious vegan lifestyle, without damaging animals or the environment. Where to go, what to know and how to grow.

Chapter 14 Viva La Vegan! Veganism in the future. Will it move more into the mainstream? How will this impact animals and the planet? What we can do moving forward.

* Interspersed throughout the book, there will be a range of interviews with vegan business leaders, vegan entrepreneurs and members of well-known vegan organisations.

Audience

My audience is people who are currently vegan, those who may be vegetarian or eat a standard diet who would like to think about incorporating more plant-based and vegan elements into their lifestyle, and businesses (such as restaurants, hotels and brands) who are keen to reach out to a vegan customer base and develop their vegan-friendly options.

A survey in 2016 discovered that there are at least 542,000 people living in the UK who follow a vegan diet, which is a giant leap from just 150,000 vegans just ten years ago (this is a whopping 360% increase!). There is a similar picture throughout many parts of the world, whether for health benefits, animal rights or environmental concerns, people are becoming more interested in where their food comes from, how their cosmetics are tested and how they personally can make a difference and a positive impact.

We can also see this reflected in the fashion world, with more and more brands offering 'vegan leather' (such as Stella McCartney) and numerous fashion houses no longer using real fur

More and more athletes are adopting plant-based eating for health and performance reasons and enjoying the myriad benefits. which encourages the general public to take more notice of what they are eating.

The food and hospitality world isn't being left behind, and veganism and vegetarianism is surging in the most unlikely of cities and there are many hotels that cater specifically for guests with dietary requirements, whilst also offering luxurious, high-end service and surroundings.
